Miss Honduras Found Dead After Vanishing Days Before The Miss World Competition

Newly-crowned Miss Honduras Maria Jose Alvarado disappeared on November 13, 2014
Newly crowned Miss Honduras Maria Jose Alvarado disappeared on Thursday.

Police found the bodies of the reigning Miss Honduras and her sister dumped beside a river Wednesday, and they said they were holding the sister's boyfriend on suspicion of killing them.
Maria Jose Alvarado, who had planned to fly to London on Wednesday to compete in the Miss World contest, disappeared with her sister Sofia Trinidad in northwestern Honduras last Thursday after a party, sparking an exhaustive search.
Chief detective Leandro Osorio said the bodies of the 19-year-old beauty queen and her sister had been found partially buried along the banks of the Aguagual River in the town of Arada.
"We are 100 percent sure that it's them," he said.
Police have detained Trinidad's boyfriend, arrested Tuesday in connection with the sisters' kidnapping, on suspicion of killing them, Osorio said.
"We are holding the author of this horrific act, Mr Plutarco Ruiz. We have found the murder weapon and the vehicle used to transport them," he said.
Police are investigating additional suspects who they believe played a role in trying to cover up the crime, Osorio added.
Organizers of the Miss World pageant issued a statement Wednesday expressing their condolences and announcing a tribute this weekend in honor of the slain sisters.
"We are devastated by this terrible loss of two young women, who were so full of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Maria Jose Alvarado & Sofia Trinidad at this time of grief," the London-based organizers said.
"We are receiving messages of condolences and support from our Miss World family across the world, who all share our sadness at such a tragedy," the statement added.

"We will be holding a special service with all of the Miss World contestants on Sunday, where we will be honoring the lives of Maria Jose Alvarado and Sofia Trinidad, and say prayers for them and their family."
The pageant organizers said they also planned donate money to a children's home in Honduras in the two women's memory.
Alvarado and Trinidad disappeared outside the northwestern city of Santa Barbara after attending a birthday party for Ruiz at a local resort.
Osorio said forensics investigators had not yet examined the bodies but that evidence indicated the women were killed the same night.
Police arrested Ruiz on Tuesday, seizing a Colt-45 pistol and two vehicles.
"Investigators have been working tirelessly to get to the bottom of these atrocious acts, which have caused mourning in Santa Barbara and across Honduras," Osorio said.
The sisters were last seen leaving the party in a Champagne-colored car.
Their mother, Teresa Munoz, says the same vehicle arrived at her home earlier that day to pick up Maria Jose, who had just arrived from the capital Tegucigalpa, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) away.
Sofia was supposedly inside the car at the time, but Munoz said she did not see her.
"It seemed strange to me that Sofia didn't get out of the car. I asked Maria Jose why and she said they were in a hurry, and left," she said.
Alvarado had been set to fly to London on Wednesday to compete in Miss World, which begins Saturday and wraps up Dec. 14.
She was also known in Honduras for her work as a model on a popular TV game show called "X-0."
Her family had made a tearful plea for the sisters' safe return after their disappearance.
Residents of Santa Barbara held a demonstration demanding their release Tuesday, when hope still lingered that they were alive. Wearing white T-shirts with the girls' pictures on them, they marched with a banner reading "May God protect them."
Honduras, a poor Central American country of 8 million people, has the world's highest homicide rate: 90.4 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The United Nations' special rapporteur on violence against women, Rashida Manjoo, warned in July that violence against women was on the rise in Honduras, with a 263.4 percent increase in the number of women killed violently between 2005 and 2013.

How To Dress Like Silicon Valley's Elite

Silicon Valley is generally better known for its high tech than for its high fashion.
But while it's true that many startup founders are still sporting the casual hoodie look, others are raising the bar for style.
We've rounded up some tech executives who have their own signature sense of style. They all express themselves in different ways, though some are decidedly more fashionable than others.
Marissa Mayer Yahoo

Square CEO Jack Dorsey is considered by many to be one of the most stylish men in tech, regularly donning leather jackets and slim suits by Prada and Hermès. He's also grabbed attention with his Dior Homme reverse-collar dress shirts, a sort of stylish take on the popped collar. You can snag a similar style from Frank Michel's online store for $80.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg opts for a less avant-garde look. In a recent Q&A with Facebook users, Zuckerberg explained that he wears the same grey t-shirt every day because it allows him to keep his mind clear for bigger decisions. You can buy a similar one at Gap for $16.95.

Google cofounder and adrenaline aficionado Sergey Brin generally opts for a more athletic look. His Vibram FiveFingers shoes are available for $52, while the athletic shirt is $18.96.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has a taste for high fashion, choosing pieces by top design houses like Carolina Herrera, Alexander McQueen, and Balenciaga. Dressing like Mayer is going to cost you — this dress by Oscar de la Renta retails for $1,690 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom maintains a polished and preppy look. You can copy his style with this $70 wool sweater from J. Crew and $120 suede shoes.

Go Aboard One Of The Largest Cruise Ships In The World

Oasis of the Seas
Cruise ships are often called "floating hotels." But Oasis of the Seas, the one of the largest vessels afloat in its industry, is more like several floating hotels.
The boat is big.
Amusingly, it's not quite as big of its sister ship, Allure of Seas.
Allure — also operated by Royal Caribbean — is reportedly two inches larger!
Oasis was built in Finland, at a cost of $1.4 billion, and been in service with Royal Caribbean since 2009, sailing from its home port in Florida.
And what luxurious cruises it takes its thousands of passengers on! The tricky thing is to not get lost amid the ship's many, many features.
The "Central Park" area on the Oasis of the Seas is set up to resemble a neighborhood with shops and a park. Located at the bottom of a six-story atrium, the area features restaurants, bars, an art gallery, a Coach store, as well as flower gardens and pathways to stroll down.

Passengers can continue to eat, buy, and explore indoors in the Royal Promenade, which features a champagne bar, a coffee shop, a karaoke spot, a dozen shops, and the Rolling Tide Bar, where guests can "enjoy a cocktail while gently moving between three decks, taking in the scenery along the way." The Promenade also features occasional street festivals and brightly-colored parades.

The 1,380 seat Opal Theater, one of two theaters on the ship, is state-of-the-art and includes a piece of the stage which extends into the audience for better interaction. Most recently, the Theater has been giving performances of the Broadway musical "Hairspray."

Some of the rooms are Loft Suites — massive 1,599-square-foot apartments with two levels, a master bathroom, a private balcony with whirlpool, a lounge with couches, and a dining area with dry bar. Some even come with a piano.

‘Elvis & Nixon’ Sets Kevin Spacey & Michael Shannon In Tale Of Historic White House Hangout – AFM

Elvis Nixon Kevin Spacey Michael Shannon
by Jen Yamato
EXCLUSIVE: Historical drama Elvis & Nixon has set two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey to play President Richard Nixon opposite Oscar nominee Michael Shannon as rock ‘n’ roller Elvis Presley as the reconfigured project hits AFM this week. Written by actor Cary Elwes with Hanala and Joey Sagal, Elvis & Nixon centers on the historic 1970 meeting between King and the president that famously yielded one of the more curious White House photo ops in pop culture history.
Liza Johnson (Hateship Loveship, Return) is directing Elvis & Nixon, which The Butler’s Cassian Elwes is producing with Holly Wiersma. Byron Wetzel is executive producing alongside Tim Smith and Paul Brett for Prescience, which is backing the project. Bloom’s Alex Walton and Ken Kao are taking Elvis & Nixon to foreign buyers at AFM. CAA and Elwes are co-repping domestic rights.

More about that meeting: On the morning of December 21, 1970, Presley showed up on the White House lawn asking to speak with the president at the height of his revived rock ‘n’ roll stardom. President Nixon received him in the Oval Office, where they discussed the patriotic Presley’s views on drug use and hippies (he didn’t care for either, though he would develop an addiction to barbiturates), and the King asked to be sworn in as an undercover federal agent, leaving behind a gifted Colt .45 for the president. Less than four years after their powwow, Nixon resigned over the Watergate scandal; three years after that, Presley was dead at 42.
Elvis & Nixon unfolds during the course of a week. Eric Bana and Danny Huston once were attached to the roles, but it’s a new package that’s also seen some script revisions that Bloom is introducing this week in Santa Monica. Filming is slated for an early 2015 start. “It’s almost hard to fathom this story which evolved in the Oval Office between these two extraordinary men,” said Walton. “It’s almost too good to be true.”
Shannon, seen recently as General Zod in Warners’ Man Of Steel and the Toronto hot title 99 Homes, just finished his run on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, which ended last month after five seasons. He’s repped by CAA, Wetzel Entertainment and Morris Yorn.
Spacey also is enjoying small-screen acclaim with his Netflix series House Of Cards, which returns for its third season next year. He’ll reprise his role in WB’s comedy sequel Horrible Bosses 2, in theaters November 26. He’s repped by CAA and Joanne Horowitz Management.
Bloom is in production on Shane Black thriller The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe, and in post on Gus Van Sant’s The Sea Of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey. They’re at AFM with Michael Apted’s Unlocked with Noomi Rapace, Renny Harlin’s Jackie Chan starrer Skiptrace and the John Moore-helmed The Hunters as well as the Gillian Flynn adaptation Dark Places, starring Charlize Theron; Liam Neeson actioner A Walk Among The TombstonesThe Woman In Black: Angel of Death; soccer biopic PeleJane Got A Gun, starring Natalie Portman; and Out Of The Dark, starring Julia Stiles and Scott Speedman.
